Since its inception in 1991, Hassett’s Jiu-Jitsu has embarked on a continuous journey within the realm of Martial Arts. In 1991, John Hassett, holding a black belt in Soo Bahk Doo Karate, opened Hassett’s Karate Club in Mays Landing. The endeavor of instructing this art and enhancing people’s lives resonated with John as he expanded the school's presence in the area. In 1997, during a visit to Philadelphia, John stumbled across Maxercise, a well-established and blossoming East Coast Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu academy. This encounter marked his initiation into the world of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ), and from his inaugural class onwards, he became deeply enamored with the discipline. Gradually integrating BJJ into his karate curriculum, John eventually introduced BJJ-specific classes at his school, thus becoming one of the pioneering entities to offer BJJ instruction in the South Jersey region.
In 2001, John, now a father of three young children, opted to relocate his school closer to his home, establishing it within a small yet highly trafficked shopping center in Washington Township. As BJJ gained traction and John ascended in the ranks, securing multiple Pan-Am titles, he made the strategic decision to transition away from Karate, focusing exclusively on BJJ.
In 2005, John received his black belt in BJJ from Phil and Ricardo Migliarese of Balance Studios, their first and currently highest-ranked black belt. As the prominence of his BJJ academy grew, John relocated once more in 2005, settling into the present-day location at 422 Delsea Drive. Here, a steady stream of enthusiasts converged, propelling his institution into one of the most well-known throughout the New Jersey-Philadelphia area. Over the years, John has passed his expertise to a variety of individuals, ranging from everyday hobbyists to professional UFC fighters. Boasting over 35 black belts earned through his instruction over the years, John aspires to continue advocating for the art of BJJ for many years to come.
